Role: What role do these characters take on in the play?
The Putnam’s join in to point out innocent people, saying that they are with the devil, so the Putnam’s can get their land. They are a greedy family who think they should own the neighbouring land.
The Putnam’s are the selfish characters who only think about getting rid of their neighbours and gaining more land for them. They come across as the average person in town helping with the witch hunt. Without the Putnam’s in the play, they are shown to be in it for themselves to gain in what they can, they aren’t worried about the real problem of people talking to the devil.

Arthur Miller- It was Edward and Jonathan Putman who signed the first complaint against Rebecca; and Thomas Putnam’s little daughter was the one who fell into a fit at the hearing and pointed to Rebecca as her attacker.

As the Putnam's want land, they are willing to put innocent life's at risk. By this they make up lies.

The Putmans are out in the town to extend the amount of land they own, to get the land they want, they tell the court that their neighbours are with the devil. In one case, the Putnmans daughter tells how one neighbours spirit came through her bedroom window at night and scratched at her eyes.

Their neighours giving their land to family, and the Putnams are unable to receive the land they want. Once the witch hunt ends, they cannot accuse people anymore, and cannot use that excuse to get rid of them and then take over their land.

The Putnams are very aggressive as they are very greedy. One conflict between Anne Putnam and Rebecca Nurse was the accusation of Rebecca putting a spell onto Anne’s babies, causing them to die, where Rebecca has plenty of children herself. The Putnams are very upfront and want things to go their way.




Motivations: What do they want? What is their motivation in the play?
The Putnam's want land. If there neighbors are been seen with the devil their land would get taken over.
The Putnam's are very greedy people who only think about themselves like the rest of the town. Ann Putnam also wants revenge on Rebecca Nurse as she blames her for the death of all her children. Rebecca Nurse has had many children who have all survived, and Ann Putnam only had one survive.
